He was supposed to be the top free agent defenseman on the market, however Jake Gardiner remains unsigned at the moment.

There was some hope on Gardiner's side that he would stay in Toronto on a more team friendly deal, however that idea flew out the window when the Leafs' acquired Tyson Barrie.

There was some chatter that the Montreal Canadiens had interest, however the Canadiens look like they've decided to continue to roll with Victor Mete beside Shea Weber and signed the more physical Ben Chiarot to fill the other hole on the left side.

The Chicago Blackhawks who needed help on the left side decided to trade for Calvin de Haan and Olli Maatta instead.

Two reasons have been mentioned for the lack of a Gardiner signing, his back injury which he decided to not have surgery for and his high contract demands.

Gardiner is apparently looking for $7million a season long term, a price some teams just won't pay.

With the majority of teams who have salary cap space available needing to sign restricted free agents, could Gardiner be on the outside looking in come September?

It's highly possible Gardiner's back injury concerns could see the forward be forced to play overseas next season.
