The NHL trade deadline is just a couple of days away and despite demands from some fans and some analysts, the Montreal Canadiens likely won't be making any major moves.
Canadiens' general manager Marc Bergevin will focus on trying to make the playoffs during the 2020-21 season and that means keeping some big name pieces around.
One of those pieces? Ilya Kovalchuk.
Many believed that Bergevin would flip Kovalchuk like he did Marco Scandella but it seems Kovalchuk will re-sign instead.
NHL insider Darren Dreger reports that those contract talks have already begun and the 36 year old is likely to sign a 1 year deal with a likely base salary of $3.5million that can climb to $5million with bonuses.
The Canadiens' will have no trouble fitting that under the cap as they have just under $20million cap space next year with Max Domi and Victor Mete being the only current roster players they'll likely re-sign.
Talked about what a Kovalchuk extension in Montreal might look like. 1 year...likely base salary of $3.5 that can climb to $5 mil with bonuses. Very Jagr-like. Parameters being discussed. Trade still a strong option, but extension talks ongoing.
