The Winnipeg Jets and restricted free agent Patrik Laine are still at a standoff when it comes to a new contract.

Winnipeg currently sits with $22million of salary cap space but only has 15 roster players signed and two of their unsigned players are two very important ones, Laine and Kyle Connor.

The duo will eat up a huge chuck of their cap and leave the Jets up against the cap.

According to Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Canadiens are showing strong interest in Laine.

"Canadiens may be focused on Laine." Pagnotta told TSN 690.

"My understanding is he is a guy the Canadiens have a lot of interest in, whether they ultimately go the offer sheet root on another player is tough to say and almost impossible to gauge right now. My understanding is that they have at least had some kind of dialogue about that,"

Laine was asked about the rumours when interviewed by ILTA-SANOMAT back in Finland. The article focused a lot on the possibility of the Laine to Montreal rumours.

Laine's answer was pretty short though:

"Might be just rumours but you never know...."
