He wasn't even here for a full season, but he left a mark on the city like very few have.
Ilya Kovalchuk's time with the Montreal Canadiens is something we all remember fondly.
Those 22 games added some real excitement during a season that was falling off the rails and with the Canadiens out of the playoffs, general manager Marc Bergevin shipped Kovalchuk off to Washington for a draft pick.
There was chatter that the two had a handshake deal to get a contract done during the offseason, however Bergevin went on a spending spree and it doesn't seem like there's any room for the veteran forward who remains unsigned.
Kovalchuk recently spoke to Sportsnet.
"This group of guys is special," said Kovalchuk as per Sportsnet. "They all care, they want to win, they want to be better. And all the young guys like (Nick) Suzuki … and (Jesperi Kotkaniemi) and (Cale) Fleury — they sent them down, but they’re all ready to play. This team has a bright future, and if I can be part of it that would be really good."
It's too bad there doesn't seem to be any room left for him.
