The Montreal Canadiens were one of the teams looking to land Ryan O'Reilly when the Buffalo Sabres put him on the trade block.
O'Reilly of course ended up going to St. Louis for Patrik Berglund, Vladimir Sobotka and Tage Thompson, a first-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, and a second-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.
He ended up being a big factor for the Blues as they won the Stanley Cup.
A couple of years later and it's been revealed what the Sabres wanted from the Canadiens.
According to Mathias Brunet of La Presse, the Sabres wanted the 3rd overall pick which the Canadiens ended up using on Jesperi Kotkaniemi along with Ryan Poehling and Phillip Danault.
Would you have made this trade?
Les Sabres voulaient le 3e choix au total, Ryan poehling et Phillip Danault pour Ryan O’reilly. Je le tiens de source TRÈS sûre. ???? https://t.co/MMrdLFwbJV
