The Montreal Canadiens made a roster move that caught some off guard on Sunday.
The team announced that they had called up Ryan Poehling and placed Jesperi Kotkaniemi on injured reserve.
It explains Kotkaniemi's sluggish start to the season and his recent scratch.
Poehling has taken his place in the lineup on the third line and head coach Claude Julien gave an update regarding Kotkaniemi on Monday.
The Habs' head coach revealed to reporters that Kotkaniemi had been dealing with a groin issue recently and it unfortunately flared up last Wednesday in Phoenix.
The roster move to IR is more precautionary than anything and there's a chance Kotkaniemi can play on Saturday against Los Angeles.
#Habs Julien says Kotkaniemi had been hampered by a minor groin issue prior to it flaring up last Wednesday in Phoenix. The decision to put him on IR was cautionary, to ensure the issue didn’t get worse.
