The Montreal Canadiens and general manager Marc Bergevin announced a free agent signing on Friday.

The Canadiens have signed free agent Defenseman Sami Niku.

The 24 year old had recently agreed to mutual terminate his contract with the Winnipeg Jets.

Niku will make $750k at the NHL level and $475k at the AHL level.

In 54 NHL career games with the Winnipeg Jets from 2017 to 2021, Niku registered two goals and added eight assists in addition to serving 22 penalty minutes. He also recorded 80 points (22 goals, 58 assists) in 114 games with the Manitoba Moose from 2017 and 2020.

In 2018, Niku became the second rookie in AHL history to earn the Eddie-Shore Trophy, awarded to the League's best defenseman.
